The goal was to create a a bare bones, very fast hunter able to bridge great distance with great speed and also fast at sub-light maneuvering.
The Edge Class links to an external Engine booster pack, that pushes the ship to 56,000 times the speed of light and achieves an operation range of 25,000 light years.
The Booster pack can be jettisoned and simply replaced. Refueling and engine FTL engine maintenance can be accomplished in less than an hour. when a spare module is available.
The Edge class has only one TL sniper cannon, and relies heavily on the latest generation of a lighter version of ship to ship missiles having its roots in the Loki torpedo and the Hotoreth Needle. These new missiles jointly developed with the Hotoreth. Using the time proven concept of revolving launchers, the Edge class can launch and engage multiple targets up to maximum scanner range (3 LY)
The new ZEUS-BOLT missile packs half the destructive power of the latest Loki torpedo but, can easily link into swarm mode making up for that, tenfold.
The Edge Class has many new features not seen in Union Ships before. She is the first official ship featuring the Narth Matter elevator technology (It had been tested by the crew of the USS Tigershark (refit))
The USS Sidewinder is the first of 20,000 Edge Class Ships ordered by the fleet, As the design directly competes with the Raptor Class of SII (Prototype USS Verocius )) and United Shipworks Taifun Class (Prototype USS Beast )
Fleet decided to order 20,000 of each, compare them in a year field trial and then decide.
