One of the indications that a society has reached Tech Level 4 is the ability to produce AI controlled robots that are capable of performing tasks that earlier could only be done with human intervention.
One of the most dificult tasks is the medical treatment - in the Union that includes several thousand species each with specific medical needs[1].
Pre Astro Earth was an exception to this rule, with the initial developments in what led to Med Bots starting in the late 20th to early 21th centuries when the idea of using robots to perform certain medical treatments started to the realm of fiction and become reality. Initially most treatments using robots had them being controlled by a surgeon initially in the same room as the robot and later remotely. These initial robots were located in operating rooms and had very little if any mobility.
The first use of mobile med bots came when a small remotely controlled robotic operating suite was connected to a Legged Squad Support System. This could allow surgeons to treat patients in dangerous locations without risk to themselves.
These cobbled together med bots were retired after the Sarans landed in New York City and provided the technology to not only travel between the stars but also some other TL 3 or 4 equipment - including their version of med bots[2]
